Job Description

1. Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies and assist in maintaining patient airway.
2. Provides manual ventilation and airway management.
3. Provides mechanical ventilation and monitoring during patient transport.
4. Initiate, monitor, and adjust mechanical ventilation to match patient needs
5. Perform patient assessment and evaluation for determination of appropriate actions and therapies,confer with medical personnel
6. Evaluate indications for and perform routine respiratory care procedures such as continuous
monitoring, bronchodilator, pulmonary hygiene, and oxygen therapies.
7. Record actions and observations on patient chart, prepare and maintain medical records
8. Draws arterial blood gas sample and interprets test results.
9. Performs diagnostic procedures such as apnea testing, spirometry, and sputum inductions.
10. Orients medical personnel to respiratory care services.
11. Operate and maintain respiratory care equipment
12. Instructs, monitors and provides feedback on students
13. Responsible for the safe and effective administration of medically prescribed medications,
knowing their indications and contraindications.
14. Knows and follows the indications and contraindications, the policy and procedures in
administering therapeutic modalities to include: IPPB, IS, USN, HHN.
15. Sets up and monitors oxygen administration.
16. Sets up oxygen cylinders and assures proper usage and safety measures are in place.
17. Performs bedside PFT tests.
18. Performs arterial punctures using radial, brachial, and femoral sites or draws off arterial lines to obtain sample for blood gas analysis.
19. Is a member of the "code team" responding to arrest situation. As part of the team may be
expected to perform CPR (compression). Must be certified in CPR procedures bi-annually.
20. Sets up requested hemodynamic lines, calibrates monitors, and troubleshoots any problems that may occur.
21. Performs artificial airway care. Daily/weekly preventative maintenance and calibration, quality assurance of ABG analyzers.
22. Demonstrates knowledge of oxygen delivery systems (i.e., nasal, venuturi mask).
23. Demonstrates knowledge of measuring devices to include, but not limited to, pulse oximeter, Wrights respirometer, oxygen blenders.
24. Is responsible for the set-up, safety check, monitoring, and troubleshooting of mechanical
ventilators.
25. Demonstrates knowledge of the set-up and administration of CPAP and non-invasive ventilation.
26. Maintains accurate and legible records, documenting clinical notes in patients charts.
27. Participates in reporting patient progress, and prioritizing patient condition to the next shift.
28. Documents in department records. Participates in staff meetings, attends lectures, conferences and seminars.
29. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
30. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
31. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow
employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
32. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team
interdepartmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Required: Completion of a two year American Medical Association approved respiratory care program;
OR an approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prefer experience in critical care

License/Certifications
Required: Licensed by the State of Minnesota (or eligible for licensure) as a Respiratory
Therapist. As a condition of employment, an employee hired on an "or eligible" status must
have a temporary MN RT permit and pass the CRT exam within one year of date of hire.
Requires Current BLS
Preferred:
Registered, or registry eligible, certified or certified eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
ACLS is preferred.
