Job Description

Embed tissue in blocks; perform microtomy at various thicknesses; perform routine and special staining, and immunohistochemical staining following established protocols.
Assist with processing of small biopsies and other specimens that can be entirely submitted, frozen section preparation, photography; process requests and referrals of specimens and slides in Surgical Pathology.
Perform rapid freezing (with liquid nitrogen) and cryotomy of specimens for optimal
demonstration of various tissue structures. Perform staining on frozen sections.
Prepare tissue specimens for light microscopic, immunofluorescent,
immunocytochemical, electron microscopy and histochemical studies.
Provide expertise and serve as a resource in at least one bench area.
Provide microtomy services to Cytology with FNAs and cell block specimens and to
Cytogenetics with FISH specimens.
Assists in the training and instruction of new employees, students and residents.
Perform and evaluate Quality Control, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting process.


Completion of a Laboratory Histology Technician training program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), OR an approved equivalent.
ASCP or NCA as a Histology Technician OR Eligible to achieve certification within 6 months of employment.
