-- Perform standard procedures in patient identification
-- Perform blood drawing procedure including venipuncture and capillary collection.
-- Document specimen collections according to standard procedures in hospital information system and label specimen accurately.
-- Perform routine clinical diagnostic laboratory tests of the laboratory.
-- Competent in five work stations
-- Use of the lab and hospital computer systems to accurately report test results, including critical results, according to established protocol.
-- Act as charge tech when assigned when supervisor staff not on site
-- Trouble shoot instrument, reagents and patient specimen problems as they occur
-- Recognize abnormal or unusual test results, communicate such results and follow established procedures for reporting critical/panic values to appropriate personnel.
-- Operate, conduct performance checks on, calibrate and maintain testing equipment and instrumentation.
-- Participate in the preparation and evaluation of maintenance schedules and operating procedures for new instrumentation.
-- Establish and monitor quality assurance and record keeping systems to assure accuracy and validity of test results while participating in quality improvement programs.
-- Define problems and evaluate methods for solutions
-- Assist in writing technical standard operating procedures according to regulatory and credentialing protocol.
-- Monitor inventory and evaluate reagents, supplies and standards. Notify Lab inventory staff of area needs.
-- Stay abreast of changes and new developments in the field of laboratory science.
-- Instruct and monitor CLS/MTs, CLT/MLTs, students and residents in technical skills and theory application through lectures, workshops and bench rotations.
-- Evaluate new technology and methodology to adapt new tests for routine use.
-- Perform and document proficiency testing
-- Demonstrate patient and family centered care behaviors
Minimum Education/Work Experience:
Bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
Completion of a CLS/MT training program approved by the National
Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS),
An approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
Customer service skills
Current certification (or eligible) as a Medical Technologist MT(ASCP)
As a condition of employment, those hired as "or eligible" must take the first available examination after their date of hire and must pass one of these certifying exams within three consecutive administrations of the exam within a 12 month period.
