During the months of October - December 2007 patients ranked Grand Itasca's Emergency Department in the top 1% in the nation - benchmarked against 908 hospitals of varied sizes nationwide. Patients that visit Grand Itasca are randomly mailed a survey asking them about wait times to see a physician, helpfulness of the staff they encounter, and the courtesy of the staff they come in contact with, as well as how well the staff listened, how the patient's family and friends were treated, was their privacy respected and were they informed about delays. In almost every one of these categories, Grand Itasca Emergency Room patients ranked our ED at the 99% percentile!

SPECIAL VISITORS TO MINNEAPOLIS MEdical Center
Last week VA Secretary The Honorable James Peake, M.D., visited the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. In addition to receiving briefings by leadership, he toured the Brain Sciences Center, Polytrauma Unit and the Transitional Rehabilitation Unit. The Secretary was keynote speaker for an event on Friday at the Whipple federal building, celebrating the opening of a vocational rehabilitation center by the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

On Monday, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Tim Walz, Minnesota’s First District Congressman, held a “townhall forum” of invited veterans from Walz’s district. Pelosi and Walz visited the Polytrauma Unit and later were joined by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and Congressmen Jim Oberstar and Keith Ellison for a news conference.

Leap Year Baby!

February 29 is a date we won't see again for four years, but for a Hinckley couple this date will always be special. Della Annette Houston was born on February 29 – Leap Day.

Della arrived at 4:02 a.m. She weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches long.

Her parents are Andrea Degerstrom and Rusty Houston of Hinckley. Della is welcomed home by her four-year-old brother, Brody. Grandparents are Doug and Denise Degerstrom of Hinckley and Rhonda and Vern Howell of Kerrick.

There have been no Leap Day babies at Kanabec Hospital for the last 4 leap years, or since before 1992, the last year records are readily available. Approximately 200 babies are born at Kanabec Hospital each year.
